Noticed this comment on D-kos relating to Khalid Jarrar's arrest;
"someone posted something to the effect that Khalid's mother had e-mailed Juan Cole to remove any mention of Khalid on Juan Cole's blog."
From what I can see, there is nothing on Juan Coles blog (nor anything that implies there ever was) Khalid's mother is very worried about Khalid, and Raed posts that his mother has been removing old posts in Arabic from her own blog.
And I am aware, that perhaps not here, but in other places, an attempt was made to spread rumour, via comment, that "Khalid has been released".
I just felt compelled to mention, for anyone who is watching, that Khalid's situation is probably best followed on his brother's blog, Raed, who is "embedding" mentions in a calm no-nonsense, non-sensationlist, manner.
An abducted blogger is safer when people are watching and aware. An abducted blogger is lucky in this respect, being part of a network that can post about things in his absence. Seeing as it is the sort of thing a blogger would probably mention, if a blogger was able too.
I suppose if I a blogger were "arrested for blogging" a blogger would be perhaps a little free-er in that other bloggers might be writing about it, however simply and sensibly. And other bloggers who are not arrested, might feel a little safer knowing that there is a watching waiting well-spring of lifted fingers ready to write in the event that something "might happen".
It is a good point, to check the mood from Khalid's family if posting about this. It is also a point, that targeting Khalid may well be a scare campaign to "shut certain people up". He is an obvious innocent. Nobody wants to be manipulated into over-reaction, or into silence for that matter.
So I guess, there is no harm in pointing out, non-sensationally, that "I am not afraid" and that many people care very much about this guy.
It might be worth mentioning again, that it is probably better to watch Raed's blog, and throw up a post or two letting other bloggers know to do the same, rather then rely on comment hear-say urging bloggers to "be quiet". I am sorry for sounding skeptical. It's what I do best and am resigned to being despised for it.
There is a petition here, which I am sure Khalid would love to be able to see, were he able to.
