I sent this letter to two of my Reps., Wilson and Pearce.
I actually think this is THE key issue in the coming election, and the future of American Democracy
Although I am a constituent of yours, and a NM resident for over thirty years, we probably don't see eye to eye on all the issues. However, one issue we can probably agree on is the importance of protecting the integrity of the voting proces. Electronic voting is a neccessary improvment to the process, but troubling questions remain as to the verifiability of results that are processed entirely by electronic means.
I am asking you, in the spirit of bi-partisanship, to co-sponsor the Voter Confidence act (H.R. 2239) put forth by Rep. Rush, which is also co-sponsored by your colleague, Rep. Tom Udall. This bill will require that a "paper trail" be included, for purposes of verification, should a dispute as to the results occur. I don't have to point out to you that there were problems with the election of 2000, as well as 2002. We risk a breakdown in the covenent of goverance in the United States if there is further erosion in voter confidence, due to uncertainty in the integrity of the vote count.
Kindly consider carefully your position in this matter; the future of American Democracy hangs in the balance and this is not a matter for partisan bickering.
Thank you,
Claude Hayward
