I have been following the snap federal elections in Canada will more than a little fascination and came upon a story at the CBC concerning political parties and the use of text messages as a new form of political feedback and outreach, primarily directed at youth. Four years ago, more than 18,000,000 voters between the ages of 18-24(?) sat out the last presidential election. Could this be a viable way to change that besides the traditional GOTV efforts?

I don't know...Is this legal in the US? If so, has this already happened in America? Just looking for some answers as usual. It would seem that this would be a non-traditional and innovative way to reach out to voters. Of course, it could also be highly annoying and backfire....
