The Bush Administration and many Republicans in Congress have pandered to the Armenian American community at large for votes on the single issue that probably matters most to Armenians
i.e., the official recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the first to occur in the 20th Century which inspired Chancellor of Nazi Germany Adolf Hitler to comment, "Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?" and, as a prelude for what would come later. The Bush Administration and Republican leadership have not only failed to deliver promises but shamelessly tilt in a bait-and-switch maneuver in support of the government of Turkey, the perpetrator of the genocide remaining in official denial.
The most recent example of this denial-in-partnership foreign policy, is the recall and
sacking of the
U.S.Ambassador to Armenia, John Evans, whose only apparent "misstep" was his recognition and acknowledgement of the Armenian Genocide, essentially repeating words used by President Reagan, in speeches before Armenian and
other groups. Over 60 members of Congress led by
Representative Markey (D-MA)
sent a
letter to Secretary of State Condolezza Rice asking for clarification. To
no avail. Ambassador Evans has now been replaced by Ambassador Hoagland who was previously posted to Tajikistan. To this day, the government
of Turkey, continues crimes against its own people as documented in a recent
public statement
by
Amnesty International.
Yet another shameful example of the duplicitous actions carried out by this
morally bankrupt administration and political party.
