    Thanks Fabian.

And even though she was"White House liaison" she really didn't have any involvement with the White House.
        by thebes

her second "written" point:she claims she never had a conversation with karl Rove or Miers (although she did have conversations with their staff...)  And says she was never in charge of putting people on, or taking them off the list.  She apparently did RECCOMEND names to go on the list, but claims they didnt appear until LATER, see?  etc.

This is a long list of nuanced defenses, well coached but it's not going to hold.

        She's talking way too fast

The gist, so far, is that the Deputy AG lied in his testimony about his role and her role.

Wasn't primary contact, never attended a meeting, no talks with Rove or Miers. Talked with members of their staff. Never recommended attorney's be removed from list.

First learned of plan in mid-05, saw draft list in 05 from Sampson to go to Miers.

Doesn't know why USAs were asked to resign. Not aware of anyone suggesting they be replaced for political retribution.

Talking about her interviewing people for positions (no doubt in reference to the "dems can't be trusted" meme. Says she went too far in some instances in asking political affiliation questions.

Now she's playing the victim card. Doesn't want to say anything negative about leadership.

Who was in the meeting?  She lists a fairly long list of names.  March 5th.

How long was Mr. Rove in the meeting?  She says half the time but she doesn't remember how long the meeting was.

Discussion about Will Mochella's testimony and the legislation - I don't know what legislation she is talking about - Tim Griffin came up at the meeting.

The Department needing to explain reasons for dismissal - communications folks wanted people to be clear in their testimony (that is a bit dodgy actually).

Rove said that they needed to be clear maybe or maybe he reiterated someone else's comment.

Was the point that they needed to have a ...

good explanation for why these people were fired."  Bingo. Why were they discussing this?  She has scrupulously avoided any implication of Rove.  I mean, she jumps right in very quickly any time that comes up and insists nothing had anything to do with Rove.

If it's our freedom they hate, they must love Bush's response to the WTC attacks.

        Further cementing several lies:
..Fredo about Bud Cummings being fired for cause

..about Fredo being generally lost in space (i.e., Sgt. Schultz defense)

..McNulty stonewalling reasons for shitcanning Iglesius

        Didn't make much progress on:

..Rove, except a rather neutral comment about "making reasons clear"

      a transcript of gonzo's testimony Page 18.

"As I have indicated I have not gone back to discuss w/ sampson & others to protect the integrety of this investigation."

      Is that statment accurate?

I don't want to link to this in any of the Live Blog diaries just yet.  You'll get too many people in here.  Is that okay or do you want me to link?  There's a lot of newbies or lurkers in the Live Blogs.

..one or two comments from Goodling:

A key comment picked up by Conyers

Gonzales, as well as the Deputy AG, was present at the meeting that discussed Inglesias.

She then said she was told that the reasons for him being on list had been decided.

So Gonzales was far more engaged than he has said he was - first strike to Conyers.

Interesting:   The decision has been made to blame McNulty (sp?) for much of what has happened. He is the fall guy.

This strategy works fine at defending the individual whilst under questioning, except that the directness of her criticisms is bound to get a rejoinder now from McNulty. So, if nothing else comes out of today, it will be the reaction tomorrow that will matter.

This is following a classic model of such hearings. What is said by way of defence creates responses that begin to pick away at the stitches of the fabric of the whole cloth.

    Again

Question: Who was responsible for assessing performance?

Her answer:"The Deputy AG and the AG of the United States.

This is the second time that she has tied Gonzales in deeper than Gonzales has ever accepted.

There seems to be a pattern here to her answers, that I wish the hearing would explore. She seems quite prepared to bury Gonzales along with McNulty. They should encourage her.

The cross-examination should deal less with her role and more her perceptions of the role of others. She seems ready to open up to this opportunity if offered.

I want to know more about these meetings

..at which the firings were discussed.

Who was present? Did she not say earlier that Gonzales was present at least at one?

This is very different from the osmosis-like,water-cooler informal discussions that Gonzales and Kyle Sampson suggested was the means by which the list was formulated. They appear to have been formally reviewed. Gonzales maintained that he was simply handed a list as a result of some vague consultative process.

There must have been minutes of these meetings. Where are they?

Done for now.  I'll update later.  I need to thank everyone whose comments I used.  But right now, I'm tired and hungry and I want to get Gonzales under oath.

Wondering how the GOP is going to spin this.  Is Monica their little darling or will they say that someone who has been in the DOJ for over five years is a clueless bimbo who doesn't know what she is talking about?
