College Republican Chickenhawks Get Busted

       Max Blumenthal of The Nation is my new hero.  In fact, anyone who exposes College Republicans as smarmy warmongers who mysteriously can’t enlist because of "asthma" or "bad knees," is my hero.  But Blumenthal has taken it to a new level with a video he produced and released yesterday on Huffington Post.  
       The video depicts his covert infiltration of the recent College Republican convention in Arlington, Virginia.  In it, he goes around engaging College Republicans about the War on Terror.  He first has them explain why it’s so important to fight, before going on to ask them why they’re not serving overseas themselves.

       This is some top-notch video entertainment.  If it weren’t so clearly terrifying that people actually think like this, it would be hilarious.  Only it’s real.  
       And what I find totally ironic is this: While the corrupt and bellicose coward Tom DeLay was invited to speak before the College Republicans, the Young Democrats of America (this very weekend) had General Wesley Clark and VoteVets chairman Jon Soltz address cheering crowds.  Weird, huh?

        knocked my left kneecap visibly cockeyed in third grade and, yes, a flight surgeon who gave me my pre-AF Academy medical during high school saw it.  He pounded on it for a long time and then asked, "Does that give you any trouble?"  

        I figured, periodic aches notwithstanding, I could walk on it, so I responded "What?  My knee?  No."  And I passed my medical exam.

        Later, in college (I chose somewhere besides the Blue Zoo), I told a retired three-star that little story.  He cracked the biggest grin.

        Also, I have a relative who made quite a name for himself as a naval aviator.  He did something similar about a different health problem, one that could have disqualified him from flying status.  Instead, he lied through his teeth so he could fly two tours in Vietnam.

        It's so easy to get around the little stuff if you truly want to serve.

            In chapter 2 of Bob Altemeyer's book The Authoritarians, he goes into this somewhat:

            If you take the entering freshman class at some big North American public university, you can develop an explanation of the differences among them in right-wing authoritarianism by again using Bandura’s social learning theory. By and large the students were probably pretty authoritarian as children, submitting to authority, learning whom to fear and dislike, and usually doing what they were supposed to do. But when adolescence struck with all its hormones, urges, and desires for autonomy, some of them began to have new experiences that could have shaken up their early learnings. If the experiences reinforced the parents’, teachers’, and clergies’ teachings (e.g. that wrecked car), authoritarian attitudes would likely remain high. But if the experiences indicated the teachings were wrong (e.g. "Sex isn’t bad. It’s great!"), the teen is likely to become less authoritarian. (Of course, if the wrecked car and one’s first sexual encounter occur at the same moment, the lesson will be mixed. But doubtless memorable.) It’s naturally easier for children from authoritarian homes to remain authoritarian, and it’s easier for kids with unauthoritarian parents to become decidedly unauthoritarian. But ultimately the experiences do most of the shaping.

            I have discovered in my investigations that, by and large, high RWA students had simply missed many of the experiences that might have lowered their authoritarianism. Take that first item on page 59 about fathers being the head of the family. Authoritarian followers often said they didn’t know any other kind of families. And they hadn’t known any unpatriotic people, nor had they broken many rules. They simply had not met many different kinds of people or done their share of wild and crazy things. Instead they had grown up in an enclosed, rather homogeneous environment--with their friends, their schools, their readings, their amusements all controlled to keep them out of harm’s way and Satan’s evil clutches. They had contentedly traveled around on short leashes in relatively small, tight, safe circles all their lives.

            Note that this is is intended to apply to his measure of Right Wing Authoritarianism (RWA), but I imagine some of this is more generally applicable nonetheless.

While I was trying to get my kids to meet people of differing cultures and backgrounds, they were trying to make their kids' world as small, fenced-in and whitebread as possible.

              Not the article of course, but the attitudes of the parents that create RWA offspring.  My personal experience (you had to expect some of this) was that I had rational RWA parents. A rather odd combination I admit, but they do exist. But so much of what constitutes RWA is not rational, it's very hard to raise children to be rational RWAs. My parents failed miserably on that account. Four children, all of them liberal, some extremely so, driven to that extreme by the hypocrisy of their RWA parents. In my case, my fundamentalist parents wanted me to write a history paper on ancient religions, so that they could somehow trap my jewish history professor into some unforgiveable sin (I can't remember what that was...both the sin and what was unforgiveable). Big mistake. Within a few short years I was a humanist. It's difficult to raise RWA children to perform well in school and have them join you for a sip of Kool-Aid. :)

    In the first days after 9/11 I wrote my local army reserve and asked how a  man my age might be able to serve. I'm 52 now, I guess I was too old then, but now, not so much. I thought there would be some place for me in a support role at least, to make things easier for all the young patriots that would surely be flocking into service. (Hah!)

    I was turned down.

    Even though I despised Bush, Republicans and wingnuts universally, I honestly thought my country might be in enough danger back then that I was willing to put my safety on the line to defend it.

    When I was young, I had briefly held a 1A classification in the very late stages of the Vietnam war and draft and had resigned myself to going if I had been called.

    So, I've had a history of arriving late, or being politically unacceptable, but at least I can say I tried. These doughy little chickenshits can't even do that! They make me sick.

          Took forever on dial-up, but worth it.
          If this was a national convention then it was a big flop.

          The impression I got was that there was a pathetic last minute attempt to get people to attend, like maybe no one showed up for (toxic) Delay, (didn't he used to OWN D.C. Society?) so the few (young looking) Republican staffers still in town were sent over (the suits) and that wasn't enough, so someone went around the Hotel offering a free lunch to (young) guests and Hotel staff in order to help fill the seats.

          Forced to listen to a Delay speech, only get the cheapo sandwich box lunch was just sad.

          The good 'ole days of a free round trip to Florida with Hotel and food paid for, just so they could pretend to be "protesting" the vote recount of the 2000 election are long gone.

          I've seen yard sales with more people than showed up for that "convention".

          A "Young College Republican" being allowed to attend a RW function in a tee shirt or a cowboy outfit?
          I think NOT!

          They each said the "required" I support the troops", but where some had the GOP talking points down pat,   others appeared totally confused as to what the
          entire thing was about.

          The "Officially not gay" Gay guy is a case in point, he was outraged by what the young woman said, he started to give his "honest" view.
          Someone off camera must have been going crazy, giving him signals to change what he was saying, you could read it in his reactions and in how he stammered until he got it right (wing).

          This was a perfect example of how the right wing works, forcing a person to say and pretend to do  exactly what the GOP demands of them.

          Max Blumenthal took pity on him and helped him out in the end.

          They really were convinced the video was being taken for a right wing audience.

          Did you notice how Delay sounded desperate when he didn't get applauded?

          Uh.. duh... the applause he used to get was phony, given for effect, just as Bush's applause is, especially the standing ovations.

          What throwbacks like Delay do not get is the fact that integration has worked.

          At least two generations have grown up Integrated to some degree in their life, be it integrated schools, sports, Church and/or social settings (no matter how hard some parents tried to prevent it).

          Delay showed his true colors.
          Instead of valuing the lives of the children "lost" to abortion, he only considers them a loss of a  potential underclass who's only value would have been to full fill  "slave labor" jobs no (legal) American Citizen can afford to live on.

          This appears to have shocked the audience into silence.

          He made it sound like the breeding of farm animals.
          Wait a minute, that is exactly what he was saying.

          I had heard this lament a few years ago, and couldn't believe the "slave owner" mentality that still existed in the Good Ol' Boys from the Good ol' Days in the Grand ol' Party of the south.

          They hated the fact that their neat little Jim Crow world of having a permanent underclass of "negros" to exploit was destroyed, and their mentality of superiority was nationally (and internationally) exposed and rejected.
          They didn't like being looked down upon and forced to exist in a society with non-white people as equals.
