Here is my knee jerk plan inspired by
this Kos' thread.
How about a simultaneous crack down policy on illegal immigrant employers and an amnesty program roled into one. I'm just shooting from the hip, but how about this:
First we start off with a broad grant of amnesty to all illegal immigrants currently in the country. They would be granted legal protection, a streamlined process towards becoming American citizens and the right to receive a living wage. It'd have to be minimum wage for now.
Second we raise the amount of legal immigrants allowed into the country each year.
Third we institute a policy whereby employers who hire undocument workers after the amnesty date are penalized by:
- They are fined a significant sum per worker
- The undocument worker is granted amnesty
- The employer is forced to hire the worker under contract for > 1 year with compensation significantly higher than minimum wage
Thus we arrest the current predicament of undocumented workers, relieve the tension on the legal documentation process, and provide a big stick incentive for employers to hire only legal workers thereafter.
What do you think?
