The last time Toledo saw John Kerry, he was dropping in for a midnight rally on the eve of the 2004 presidential vote.
Mr. Kerry noted his work for 150 candidates in 24 states this year but said he had not decided if he will return as a presidential contender in 2008.
Eighteen months and one narrow, pivotal Ohio loss later, the Massachusetts senator returns today to help state Democrats raise money at a pair of evening events. Mr. Kerry will attend a $250-a-head private reception at the Leslie Adams Gallery, then headline a rally with U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, the Democratic nominee for governor, at 6:30 p.m. at the Toledo Amtrak station.
He discussed the ongoing importance of Ohio in national politics, expressed doubts that the House and Senate could compromise over immigration, accused President Bush of breaking the law in domestic surveillance efforts, and reiterated calls to pull troops from Iraq by year's end.
Mr. Kerry praised Mr. Strickland and U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, the party's nominee for U.S. Senate against GOP incumbent Mike DeWine, in a telephone interview this week.
