It may sound simplistic but it also may work and right now, there's nothing else on the table. This is the letter I sent DNC Chairman Dean. Please freely spread the ideas if you feel they have merit:
Chairman Dean,
I worked on your presidential campaign for two years, I also worked for Kerry's candidacy (though my heart wasn't in it) and I spoke on your behalf to DNC members in Sacramento, CA when you were running for the chairmanship.
I am concerned that the Democratic Party has not come up with a unified withdrawal plan for the Iraq war or publicized one widely in the media. I know you were against the war from the start, that's one of the reason's I backed your campaign for president. Now, as the leader of our party, you need to push the rest of the party to join in a clear and realistic call for ending our occupation of Iraq.
Please consider adopting a proposal of having UN peace-keeping forces replace US military in Iraq. That is how we won the peace in Kosovo and other troubled places in the world in the past. The UN is the only international body of law that can undo what the Bush Administration has done in the Middle East.
Please call on Bush to:
- Apologize for our invasion of Iraq, which documents and witnesses now prove was based on incorrect intelligence.
- Promise to fully investigate who was responsible for the mistakes and prosecute them accordingly.
- Officially request that the UN send peace-keeping forces to help Iraq avoid civil war.
- Close all US military bases in Iraq.
- Bring our troops home.
Chairman Dean, this is a basic exit strategy. Even if you don't adopt something along these lines, the Democratic Party is overdue in its duty to present an alternative to Bush Administration war activities in Iraq.
