So, this morning, I got my first wingnut Christmas gift. And soon I'll return the favor, but I doubt they'll much appreciate it.
It happened like this: this morning we found the "Claire" sign I'd had out in the front yard, mangled and tossed to the side of the driveway. It was a sign I'd put out when Claire McCaskill announced she was running against Jim Talent for the MO Senate seat, one from her gubernatorial campaign last year I'd altered since she doesn't have campaign signs ready yet. All it says is "Claire" in bold letters, with her last name smaller up in a corner. That's it, since I cut off the bottom of the sign to remove "For Governor".
Now, I'm going to make some assumptions. First is that whoever did this is a fairly hard-core Talent supporter, since nowhere on the sign does it indicate anything about McCaskill's party affiliation or the office she's running for. Second, that said person is likely a Christian, probably of the far-right variety, since McCaskill has opposed a number of their efforts over the years.
So, said good Christian GOPer came up into my yard (well up into the yard, we've got a large property and it was a good distance back from the street), pulled the sign up, then did their best to wrap it into a pretzel. Ignoring my private property rights, freedom of expression, et cetera. Sometime early on Christmas Eve. Let's hear it for "goodwill to men". Merry Christmas, eh?
Well, I got the sign straightened out and repaired, placed back in the yard, a little further from the street. Screw `em if they think I'll give up that easily.
And here's the good part: I'm going to make a donation to the McCaskill campaign this time and every future time this happens, in the name of the Unknown Wingnut. And I'm going to put a LTE in the paper announcing this, maybe get a columnist buddy of mine to write about it. If you'd like to join me in sticking a thumb in their eye, feel free. Well, my Holidays just got a bit Happier, here's hoping that yours does too!
