I am an Obama supporter and was happy to see the support of the Culinary Union in Las Vegas. I read the local papers online, and have followed them from Iowa, to New Hampshire, to Nevada.
The front pages this evening in Las Vegas have Hillary visiting Hispanic neighborhoods, trying to get the Culinary Union members to support her, despite the endorsement for Obama.
More power to her. I say - go for it. But couldn't help noting the tone of the Las Vegas Sun under the headline "Clinton Goes Over Culinary's Head."
Her campaign’s message: The endorsement means nothing and Culinary members should follow their conscience and not the order of union Secretary-Treasurer D. Taylor. It was a political kick in the shins to Obama and the union, all delivered with the New York senator’s trademark wide grin.
Asked about this shrewd maneuver, a Clinton aide merely laughed and claimed ignorance.
You can read the entire article here and the comments are priceless.
On a related note, the Las Vegas Review Journal also carried the story of Clinton's visit to the Hispanic neighborhood, but had a priceless quote I just had to share. As she was speaking with a family about the challenges they face economically with jobs and mortgages:
"We treat these problems as if one is guacamole and one is chips, when ... they both go together," she said.
That line alone prompted me to write this diary. The full text of the Review Journal's article is here.
With all the talk about Obama and unions as "special interests" I wondered what people thought of all this. Does it matter? How strong are the union endorsements?
