Many have probably heard about the latest decision to allow the Frankenstein animals of the farm world, clones, into the food supply without any warnings or labeling. Dairy farmers are also allowed to give their cows rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) to increase milk production. Can what you don't know hurt you?
This week the FDA approved cloned meat and milk from cloned cows to be sold to consumers. The FDA does not require producers of cloned meat and derivatives from cloned animals to labeled as such.
The FDA had approved the use of rBGH, in dairy cows years ago. This drug is banned in Canada and in Europe.
The FDA concludes that both rBGH and products from cloned animals are safe for consumers. But they refuse to mandate labeling these products.
I'm the type of person that reads the labels of all foods that I purchase. I want to know what's going into my body. I also happen to be a vegetarian.
But for those who choose to eat meat and dairy products, why the reticence on the part of the FDA to label foods and give consumers the most information on the contents of their foods?
The next time you snicker at someone for eating tofu or drinking soymilk as yourself: Can what I don't know really hurt me?
