Overturning Roe v. Wade.
Restricting marriage to straight couples.
Displaying the Ten Commandments in public parks.
Those are three stated goals of Focus on the Family. They want a Republican in the White House, since the next president will almost certainly appoint one or more justices to the Supreme Court.
There have been several diaries on Daily Kos urging people to support the Democratic nominee this fall, even if that person is not your preferred candidate. For various reasons, this is still an issue of debate.
Many people have pointed to the Supreme Court. "If nothing else, vote Democratic for the sake of the Supreme Court" is a common refrain -- and not without reason.
Religious conservatives also are looking to the Supreme Court.
Focus on the Family says:
This next election may be the most critical one our nation has ever faced.
They give two reasons why this election is so important, and Reason Number 1 is the Supreme Court:
Reason No. 1: The Supreme Court hangs in the balance. By all indications, President Bush hit home runs with both of his appointments to the Court. That means one more conservative justice could tip the scales and overturn Roe v. Wade, preserve natural marriage, rein in obscenity, make public parks safe for the display of the Ten Commandments and much more. The three most likely retirees are liberal justices who are advanced in years. The simple reality is that so much of what you and I have been working for is within reach, depending on what happens in the 2008 elections.
There you have it.
Their reason number two for the importance of the election is a fuzzily worded statement about "the survival of America" and "the war with the Islamic extremists."
I realize that overturning Roe and the other hoped-for changes would require a bit more than a Republican in the White House or one or more additional conservative justices in SCOTUS, but that's what they want to do.
If a Republican is elected president, can we trust even a Democratic congress to stop another extreme conservative SCOTUS nominee? How much are you willing to bet on that one -- your reproductive freedom, any hope of marriage equality in the future?
