Here's why I am not giving up on John Edwards' campaign even though it looks dark. It's because I am a Mets and Giants fan. Or at least this metaphor is. Really I'm sticking with him because he is best on the issues and has a piss and vinegar streak we need in the White House.
But for the purposes of this diary, Mets and Giants.
I keep getting told that Edwards is finished and that Obama/Clinton has it locked up. I don't buy it for a second, because on September 12 with 17 games left in the season the Mets had a seven game lead. All they had to do was win six games and lose eleven and they were the National League East champions. That's as good as a lock in baseball.
But they won five and lost twelve, got swept by the Phillies who went on to the division championship and the playoffs. The Mets, prohibitive favorites, stepped in shit and came up smelling like shit.
So please don't tell me that after two primaries and two caucuses with 48 or so left to go that this thing is over. I got my heart broken by the Mets this year, and it teaches you anything can happen to a frontrunner.
Then, of course, we have my Giants. While the Mets were collapsing the Giants were putting together two horrible losses to the Cowboys and Packers. The defense gave up 80 points in two games. For non-football fans (if you got this far) that's a lot of freaking points, enough to get a defensive coach fired mid-season. Everyone thought their head coach was toast and their quarterback Eli Manning was over.
Then the Giants won 10 of their next 14 games, including every game on the road, to make the playoffs. In the playoffs the Giants came back to win games against these same Cowboys and Packers and are in the Superbowl, something no one would have predicted back on September 12.
I've had my heart repaired by the Giants this year, and it teaches you that as long as you are still in the game anything can happen.
Edwards is still in the game.
Edwards is still my candidate.
What can I say? I'm a fan.
