To me, one of the most inspiring elections ever was the Mario Cuomo v. Ed Koch democratic primary for NY governor. Predominantly Jewish areas with historically progressive voting patterns supported the progressive Italian American candidate. Predominantly Italian American districts with historically conservative voting patterns voted for the conservative Jewish American. People voted on the basis of their philosophy, NOT their "tribe".
Last night? Not so much.
The white lady got the votes of whites and women.
The black guy got the votes of men and blacks.
Excepting those states with "home field" advantage (Illinois, NY, Ark), you could have predicted the outcomes in the larger "must win" and southern states by reviewing census data as to sex and race, and been way more accurate than a Zogby poll. (Not everywhere, not always, not in the mountain west, but frequently enough.)
I don't think that's anything to celebrate. I'll be happier when a black male candidate running against a white woman gets 60% of women, and the white woman gets 80% of African Americans.
