It's time for Hillary to gracefully step aside.
The results in Virginia tonight are clear. Obama is building momentum. He is galvanizing a coalition of whites and blacks, men and women, rich and poor. The Virginia victory marks six wins in a row for Obama. In a few minutes, that number will become eight. Next week, he will most likely win in Wisconsin and Hawaii as well.
At this point, the best Hillary can do it to drag this contest out. She can win a few states, like Texas and PA, but she won’t win enough to overtake Obama in earned delegates. If Hillary is to win the nomination, it will have to be at the hands of the superdelegates (or by backroom dealing to get the delegates from Florida or Michigan seated at the convention). Hillary’s best bet is Democratic dysfunction. If she wins this nomination, it will mean that the party has bifurcated.
For the sake of the party, and so we can begin focusing on John McCain, Hillary should step aside and return to her distinguished career in the senate. The party, and the country, will be better for it.
