"These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."
-Thomas Paine, 1776

Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) will be reprising the Winter Soldiers hearing, Thursday March 13 to Sunday March 16. If you are not familiar with the first Winter Soldiers hearings, here is the Wiki entry.

My challenge after the fold.

Last night at the Veterans For Peace chapter 72 monthly general membership meeting, we voted to give IVAW one thousand dollars in support of the Winter Soldiers hearings. We also gave $750 to our sister chapter in Eugene to help pay fuel costs for their cross country "Winter Soldiers Tour." They will be driving their bus (the old Spirit of Graberville) from Oregon to D.C. raising hell along the way. They will also be carrying a citizens arrest warrant for Bush and Cheney. On March 15th here in Portland, Or. there will be a rally and march to mourn the anniversary of the illegal invasion of Iraq. At our booth, we will be streaming the hearings for all to witness.

Cindy Sheehan wanted to ask the President,"... why did he kill my son? He said my son died in a noble cause, and I want to ask him what that noble cause is." My friends, the truth is a noble cause and the IVAW's Winter Soldier hearings will be about the truth.

My challenge, IVAW needs your support and they need it now, dig deep.
You can donate to the IVAW's Winter Soldier hearings here.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

They not only need a copy of everyone's DD2-14, but they need to really make sure these folks are who they say tehy are. And that they served in the unites they claimed they served.

Make each one sign an affidavit outlining their claims.

They can be contacted via email (wintersoldierally at ivaw.org) if you want to pass them on. I will do the same.

I was heavily involve din the 2004 push back against the attacks on John Kerry. His participation in Winter Soldiers was one of the issues that came up.

I actually had someone in Madison Wisconsin go to the state historical archoive where the Vietnam Veterans Against the War files were deposited to see what the origial documents contained.

I also checked the only two copies of Kerry's Winter Soldiers book out pof the local library.

One of te main attacks on the original winter soldiers hearinsg was that some of them turned out to be fabricators. Also, that it was funded by "radicals" like Jane Fonda, etc.

So, I strongly suggest that all of these stories get double and triple checked from multiple sources, and include affidavits and copies of their discharge paperwork.

All of this should be scanned in and posted online so that bloggers etc can post links to them and use them as reference materials.

The stronger the security precautions are, and the more stringent their standards are for accuracy, the more credible the reports will be not only during the campaign but for posterity.

To them with your suggestions and a link to this diary. I will also have our liaison contact them.

why don't you carry a list of needed improvements in the VA, and advocate for those who served and now need help.

Not my chapter. I am sure this will be part of their raising hell however as they do advocate for all of those issues.

    Thanks for writing,

Great point and it would be good to spread that challenge through Daily Kos and other progressive blogs who don't cover IVAW and our organizing too much.

Not only are credentials checked but we have a very thorough verification process for every testifier. It does not mean that there will not be efforts to discredit what we are doing but we are putting a variety of mechanisms in place on this and a variety of issues. Keep spreading the word and hope you are able to donate to the cause and set up a screening in your local community.
