Hillary Clinton's campaign apparently rented its donor list to one of the largest brokerage firms for mailing lists in the country, InfoUSA, as reported by NPR. How you "rent" a list is anyone's guess.
The firm's executive, Vinod Gupta, has ties to the Clintons, as having Bill Clinton on his payroll for the tune of over $3 million. He is believed to be one of the donors to the Clinton Library (names of which have been kept secret). The Clinton campaign apparently sold the list for a paltry $8K (it may be worth $800K, according to the NPR transcript).
Campaigns generally do not sell or rent their list of donors during the election cycle.
Gupta's firm has close ties with CNN, as part of their polling apparatus, with Opinion Research Corporation.
