NCD = NON CANDIDATE DIARY
The Anti-reproductive rights coalition, headed in large part by soon-to-be-ex-governor Matt Blunt, is working hard to make choices even harder to come by in the state of Missiouri.
As The Kansas City Star's report on MO House Bill 1625 indicates:
Legislation presented to a House panel last week would classify emergency contraception as an abortion-inducing medication, contrary to the definition used by the Food and Drug Administration.
What's equally troubling is
The bill also would protect pharmacies from lawsuits and from punishment by state regulators for refusing to sell or fill a prescription for any drug defined as triggering an abortion. Supporters said it would remove any financial incentive to sue the pharmacy’s owners for refusing to sell or stock an item that violated their conscience.
Again, the conservative agenda is rather than address the laws eliminate any legal redress a citizen has against the state. Conservatives apparently now advocate a system of shielding from lawfully-protected legal redress those companies who support them in their goal to mandate morality on their terms for all citizens.
"Since we can't get the law written the way we want it," these religious-conservatives-come-corporate-fascists reason "we'll just shield all of our corporate 'friends' from legal recourse pursuant to the law as written."
But the real scam is, there's no THERE there.
Why shield pharmacies when there is no legal obligation on them to stock the drug? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but i know of no law that says a pharmacy HAS to stock a particular drug. Aren't the pharmacies shielded from liability under existing laws that state a retailer can sell or not sell a product as they choose? How is the "protection" under this proposed law any more forceful than the protection afforded under current laws?
It's not. Instead, it's lip service to the new conservative meme: more legislation to protect the already massively protected. These people have a very warped sense of being aggrieved. "THEY MEAN TO SUE ME, MAH!"
Last time I checked (and as a business owner I do it every day) potential for being named in a frivolous law suit comes with the territory of owning a business. Especially when you do business with the public at large.
By pretending to create legislation that shields businesses from something which they're already shielded from Conservatives just use legal vitriol to mask centuries-old contempt for women's sovereignty over their bodies and a couple's right to choose what is the best course for their familial actions.
If you live in Missouri, please call your state representative and tell them you do not support this smoke and mirrors.
