So am I. But being mad at BillO is kind of like breathing. You just can't help it most of the time. The problem, as I see it, for the last decade or so is that when he pulls the kind of crap like he did today we tend to just post diaries about how hateful of a man he is. We rail against Faux News and come up with alot of witty new nicknames to mock him with.
But that doesn't do much in the grand scheme of things. After reading his statement I decided I'd do some research into possible things that we can take ACTION on, to combat this type of behavior, not just from the likes of Bill O'Reilly, but from any source in the future. Follow me over the break for what I came up with.
First off file a complaint with the FCC. It may be that they don't decide to pursue the matter - they are controlled by the GOP after all - but getting a few thousand complaints will at least put him on notice that there is a large number of the viewing public that was upset enough to take time to complain. The FCC's complaint webpage is here: http://www.fcc.gov/...
Looking at their definitions, this wasn't obscene (I think the FCC and I define the word "obscene" slightly differently). I would recommend the general complaint form.
Second, it's important to remember that television pundits aren't so much journalists as they are salesmen and women. The only reason that BillO has a show at all is because he moves a lot of product. If he stops being able to move said product, he loses his sponsors, and thereby his show. Remember what happened to Bill Maher? The same concept applies here. Now would be a good time to contact his show's sponsors and let them know that you don't plan on supporting their company if they continue to support Bill O'Reilly. And, obviously, stop buying products from them until they stop buyinig advertising air time on the man's show. As always, it's best to keep contact with sponsors professional and as polite as is possible for a complaint email/letter/phone call. The best list of sponsors I could find was here: http://www.newshounds.us/...
That is from July of 2007, so I'm not sure how current it is. If anyone finds a more up to date or comprehensive list please post in the comments and I will update accordingly.
Using such a loaded term as lynching when talking about anyone goes beyond the pale, let alone when a person is discussing the wife of a high profile political candidate. Home Depot already got the message. I think it might be time for some of his current sponsors to hear our voice again.
Edited for grammar because I can't speel gud.
