Vacant seat, a strong popular man running as Democrat. Good news! Bobby Bright was elected mayor of Alabama in 1999 and defeated longtime incumbent Emory Folmar to get the post. Over his seven years in Montgomery, he has done dramatic expansions and restoration of the downtown area, and helped attract thousands of jobs to the city by making it the location of a new Hyundai plant.
He's also responsible for bringing a new stadium to the city and the minor league team the Montgomery Biscuits, now champions of their division two years running. He won re-eelection in the city of Montgomery twice by landslides.
He is extremely popular in the city and could stand a good chance at getting another seat pickup for the Dems in 2008.
