I have never been so hungry for a presidential election in my life. I remember voting for Carter absentee before taking off on my first trip to Europe. I was young, pretty much just out of college, and thought the world was my oyster. But even then I knew Reagan had the kiss of death about him, and his election -- oh god did I get asked a million "How in hell?" questions by Europeans -- sent shivers down my spine.
I am still shivering.
I want America back. Actually, I want the America that never was: a country that really lives "the dream" of freedom and multiculturalism. I want to live among a people that admits its mistakes (we started our history by slaughtering Indians, no matter what bullcrap Mrs. Cheney is spewing this year) and resolves to protect the environment, protect people before corporations ... my list is long. But it's a simple list. In every choice we make, I want humanity, decency, and honesty to be our core values. I want the real deal: a democracy, with all the intense sunlight that it entails (and which we have rarely had, no matter the ruling party).
Core values. Ah ... you mean, like American flag lapel pins? I hope that one is dead.
Thank you, Obama, for being an American like me. An American who puts deeds and ideas before suit jewelry.
And now -- the funnies. This Onion video says it all.
