Tom Lehrer, the American standard for musical wit and irony, has endorsed Obama's candidacy for President! Yes, that Tom Lehrer! (more after the jump)
Tom Lehrer, the American standard for musical wit and irony, has endorsed Obama's candidacy for President!
Lehrer, the Harvard and University of California mathematician and creator of such epic standards as "Pollution", "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park", "The Vatican Rag", "The Masochism Tango", and, more recently, "I'm Spending Channukah in Santa Monica" has endorsed Barack Obama in a blog by the Washington Post's Gene Weingarten. When asked why he hasn't written songs in the past few years, Lehrer says that he feels like a resident of Pompeii asked to make a few humorous comments about lava.
Lehrer, who has become more private in his later years, was quoted by Weingarten in his blog, "I asked Lehrer if there was anything he'd like to add, in this chat, about the current president. After a bit of pause he said, 'Just tell the people that I am voting for Obama.'"
Leherer also said, earlier but quoted by Weingarten, that "George W. Bush didn't merit being satirized, he merited being vaporized."
