With jobs
Unfortuately yesterday jobs figures where nothing to be glee about. With every job loss, their is compelling personal tragedy, because as melodramatic as it should, some of the people who got their pink slip will never get hired again or drift into a cycle of personal destruction.
To economists and central bankers, they are numbers and statistics, which act as an economic indicator, but, as a person i think they morph purely from being symbols on a page or web page, to an event that can have reprecussions for years to come.
Yesterday figures also presented an idelogical problem for many conservatives, one it confirms that the Bush economic plan, fuelled by debt, is the wrong game plan for America, and undercuts McCain economic plan. But also, in the detail, we see that the Government also hired 38000 people, which to me, more importanly undercuts the so called " limiting big govenment " philsophy espoused by a conservative president.
In order to arrest the jobs decline, i would eliminate the payroll taxes paid by employers, personal i dont see how you are going to encourage people to hire, if your have to pay a tax for it. Any elimination would be paid for taking the ceiling off payroll taxes, paid by an individual.
Also and something i have diaried before, is greater investment in vocational training, that way, people who are unemployed or people in work but looking to move on to a different career or better job.
Unemployment has so many costs attached to it, whether it be economic, social or moral, I dont root for more unemployment, and neither should anyone who reads this dairy
