Earlier today, the National Republican Governors group called for NY Gov. Eliot Spitzer to resign because of being implicated in a prostitution ring. Spitzer apologized, wife at his side, to his family, the people of NY, etc...
It is said that he will not resign, and good on him if that is what he believes he should do. While I personally think he should step aside if he in fact did commit a crime, I wish he would step forward and make the following statement:
"I Eliot Spitzer have apologized to my family and my constituents; however, certain politicians from the Republican side of the aisle have called on me to resign.
Given the reality of my situation, I will in fact, resign upon one condition. That condition is that my resignation will become effective on the date that Republican US Senators Vitter and Craig resign their seats in the US Senate. In their cases, Republican Senator Craig plead guilty to solicitation and Republican Senator Vitter has been linked to a Washington DC Prostitution ring.
So, until I have confirmed resignation of both Republican Senators, the date of my resignation becoming effective will be on indefinite hold.
This will force the discussion away from his reactions and onto the hypocrisy of Republicans calling for his resignation while ignoring their own.
