Obama chose to describe Ferraro's comments as "divisive" and "ridiculous" and "wrong-headed." I couldn't agree more.
What if he had instead turned the tables on Ferraro and created a moment that connected thematically to his 2004 convention speech and his overall narrative, such as:
"Geraldine Ferraro said that I am lucky to be where I am, which is in first place for the Democratic nomination. Like most Americans, at first I couldn't believe my ears, but then I realized she is right: I am lucky. I am lucky to be an American. I am lucky to live in a country where the grandson of a Kenyan goat-herder and a WWII veteran from Kansas could have this opportunity. I am lucky to have a wonderful wife and two beautiful daughters who believe in the promise of America."
