I’ll be brief here. No one saw the "historic" speech that Barack Obama gave today that has this site swooning, and collapsing on the fainting couch. I went to work today. I came home. I watched the news and saw a talking head jabbering OVER Obama’s speech. They finished the segment with the infamous segment of Obama’s pastor, Jeremiah Wright , saying "God Damn America". Most Americans are like me. They weren’t glued to YouTube, or C-Span or MSNBC. They didn’t excitedly google the text of the speech. They aren’t willfully ignorant. They just didn’t go out and get it the way his adherents have.
Damage was done here and he didn’t repair the damage because: 1) he was not heard and because 2) the message wasn’t quite as simple and powerful as "God Damn America". Of course, this sort of guilt by association is pathetic, and a deliberate distraction from the multiple, planetwide disasters set in motion by this Republican administration. But it works. And that’s what we were always up against –one of the most effective propaganda machines any quasi-dictatorship has ever devised. Obama apparently thinks he can speechify the American people – and that they are actually going to listen to the speech. They didn’t.
For the past 7 news cycles they have been stripping this man down to his underwear metaphorically. He did not recover today. He gave a great speech –to the choir. But the Reagan Democrats, and the others that we need to cross over, did not hear. All they heard was "God Damn America".
In the meantime, McCain is off making money in fundraisers, BBQ’ing for the press, being idolized by troops in Baghdad photo ops. All because the Democrats cannot come to any form of compromise about this will turn out.
I understand that my views will be unpopular, and that this site has been commandeered by Jackals for Obama. That’s fine. I’m telling you, I am not going. Because you need to hear something besides the sound of your own voices.
This man wasn’t vetted and this was all very predictable. There is more to come just like this. I voted for the lady who had the house burn down around her, and then rose from the ashes with a plan to make them very sorry they ever messed with her.
This incident is very bad not just for Obama, but for the Democratic brand. Millions of Americans are trying to envision their pastor saying what Wright said. They are having trouble doing it.
Will Americans forget this and vote the issues in November –issues which favor Democrats? If the past is prologue to the present, there is no guarantee. The Republicans have been very lucky lately – Spitzer was felled over a peccadillo that barely marred Vitter, a major government contract was steered away from a blue state (Washington) and toward a red state that Obama had aspirations to win in November (Alabama)...and now this. The speech did nothing but make the choir sing a little louder.
