i just couldn't take it anymore so i wrote a letter to the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram.
the MSM is making such a fuss over the Reverend Wright's comments and Mr. Obama being a member of Wright's congregation and giving mccain a pass. i'm still wondering if this is because mccain is a rich white male or because mr. obama is perceived as dangerous because he's not a rich white male.
The text is below the fold.
anyway, here is what i wrote. the editor has already contacted me to make certain i wrote it and he said they would print it.
really now, it's just a letter to the editor...there's lots of those LOL
Letter Text:
Firebrand preachers! Firebrand preachers have been fixtures in American culture since the founding of this nation. In the beginning, churches were the only places where the citizenry could hear of (mostly) current news and churches were hotbeds of political activism.
This has not changed.
The Reverend Wright used his pulpit to express what he perceives as racial hypocrisy. The Reverend Martin Luther King did the same, not only in his church, but he took his much needed rhetoric to the streets. The difference between the two men and their message delivery is slight. Dr. King started and kept the civil rights movement in the forefront of the news, where it needed to be.
The Reverend Wright was doing the same, although he remained in his church. While i don't agree with Rev. Wright's use of the pulpit for purposes of propaganda, i understand it and, more importantly, it happens every time a preacher in any church speaks and it isn't always about civil rights, but, isn't that what true christians believe? The equality of man?
Does this belong in a church? i can't answer that, only the people involved in organized religion seem to be the self-appointed arbiters of what belongs in a church and what doesn't. i no longer belong to any church and embrace no religious doctrine. the "Golden Rule" seems good enough for me.
Mr. John Hagee, Mr. Ron Parsley, each of these men has spouted hate language from their pulpits. Mr. Hagee has called the Catholic Church "The Great Whore". Funny sir, there's no mention of the fact that John Hagee lives like a king and has a megachurch that has branched out into the investment field and elsewhere.
Mr. Parsley openly preaches hate from his pulpit on a regular basis.
However, Mr. McCain has never been forced by the media to "denounce and reject" or to "renounce and reject" or even to acknowledge that his preaching supporters are purveyors of hatred through their preaching.
Maybe the media thinks Mr. McCain should be given a pass because he's "older" or because he's "only accepting endorsements and money" from hate mongering preachers. Oh, certainly, they are not on his committees, but, the money keeps rolling in from the members of Hagee and Parsley's churches.
Or maybe...just maybe...the mainstream media feels that rich white men don't need to "denounce and reject" hatred.
However you preach it, wherever you preach it, hate is hate and Mr. Obama has addressed the issue.
Has Mr. McCain? His denunciation was delivered in an off-handed way and then, silence from both McCain and the media.
Double standards, hypocrisy and hatred are alive and well...and we're only 7 years into the 21st century. We should be ashamed of ourselves as humans!
