The taiwan UN referendum, which many view as the first step towards independence, fails to draw 50% participation to pass. This indicates that Taiwan population are more willing to keep the status quo than push for independence.
As reported by guardian
The referendum, which asked Taiwanese whether Taiwan should join the United Nations under the name "Taiwan", failed to gain the required participation level needed to be considered valid.
The United States, Russia and Britain were all sharply critical of the referendum, saying it was needlessly provocative in trying to alter the status quo with Taiwan's political archrival China.
A second referendum asking whether Taiwan should join the United Nations under the island's official name, Republic of China, or any other practical name, also failed to break the 50 percent threshold.
This is probably a surprise to many outside people. It can only be interpreted as a reluctance of Taiwan people to push for independence at this point. Not to push for an outright independence, while keeping the status quo of a de facto independence, may be a wise decision by Taiwan people that will allow a better chance of a future peaceful resolution of this issue.
