The "bipartisan" California Voters First is trying to gin up signatures to get on the ballot in November.
A lot of folks—Democrats and Republicans—support nonpartisan redistricting reform.
But when in doubt, follow the money.
The effort is funded almost entirely by Republican donors.
The Republicans are hoping to pull an April Fools’ Day hoax on the California voters next November.
The initiative would guarantee Republicans disproportionate voting power. Republican registration has fallen in the last two years to 33.3%. But, no matter how registration falls, they would always have 36% of the Commission.
Likewise, Democrats would always be under-represented: voter registration is at 43% now, but could never get above 36% of the commission.
And they plan to push it to other states that are trending Democratic if they're successful. As former California Republican Party chair Michael Schroeder put it, "This is a very good first step."
