There is an excellent piece of commentary at The Carpetbagger Report, that everybody should read if only to confirm that it is truly a miraculous event that Mr.Matthews manages to sustain any sort of regular employment. It really makes me suspect that the last bastion of employment for incompetent white males is in fact the MSM.
Steven Benen notes that Matthews manages to both flirt with vague racism, ( my opinion, not one stated by Benen ) and suggest that somehow those in the African American community are not regular people.
Matthews offered the staggering insight that he was not surprised that Obama was good at basketball but disturbed by the lack of prowess at another sport.
Benen, in describing the exchange with Senator McCaskill, notes that Matthews repeatedly asks how Obama can connect with regular people as if this is a problem. In other words, Matthews manages to both create a problem that essentially doesn't exist because since when does he get to decide who regular people are, and why must he insist on describing African Americans as the "other"? From what I can tell from reading Benen, McCaskill didn't exactly agree with, but nor did she call him on this vast trough of stupidity.
Matthews also suggests that the other group of people who are attracted to Obama are those with college or advanced degrees which seems to be a subtle play on the idea that those with college degrees are somehow elitist and out of touch and that those who have college degrees could not possibly have anything in common with those who don't.
A few weeks ago, I saw this guy at an anti-war demonstration...
I did fail to interview him to ask him if he was "regular." I did not ask if he had a college degree. I did not ask him if he knew how to bowl. I just naively assumed he was expressing his right to declare himself.
For the record, I am candidate agnostic. Sadly, the American people are being diverted by blather dressed up as analysis during a critical time in our history. We deserve better and so do the Dem candidates.
