Looks like the excitement in the Republican camp for their top tier recruit in New Jersey was a little premature:
From the New York Times:
After listening to requests over the last few days from Senator John McCain of Arizona and other prominent Republicans, John F. Crowley, a biotechnology executive from Princeton, N.J., announced Sunday that he would not enter the New Jersey Republican primary for United States Senate.
With the primary challenger for Lautenburg and the perceived strength of Crowley, this could have been a competitive race for a Democratic seat. At the very least, it could have been an expensive race to defend, given the cost of the New Jersey media markets.
This is great news. Maybe one of their fourth tier candidates is still available?
Now, Republicans will choose among three candidates for the right to take on the Democrat nominee...The three Republicans include two conservatives, State Senator Joseph Pennacchio, a dentist from Morris County, and Murray Sabrin, a finance professor at Ramapo College; and Andrew Unanue, a nightclub owner and Manhattan resident whose family runs the Goya food company.
I think we're all pulling for a run by Unanue for the comedic value.
Now it seems like Louisana might be the only competitive Democratically held seat. (Any news on South Dakota?)
