Hillary says she's learned the lessons of Democratic presidential defeats, but then she goes and dresses herself up as a duck hunter. Apparently, it's her who doesn't remember what a world of good that duck-hunting bit did John Kerry with "Reagan Democrats" in 2004. I don't think Hillary actually goes duck hunting, and I hope not, for her sake. A picture of her in duckboots and camo would be the greatest gift to the GOP since Michael DuCkakis in a tank...
There are so many reasons to support Obama at this point. I think that he is so disarmingly honest, as politicians go, that he would even publicly admit that he has sipped lattes AND he inhaled. But maybe the best reason of all is that he is the first Democratic candidate of the twenty-first century who has not claimed that he shoots ducks for fun.
John Kerry not only claimed it, he posed with shotguns, and I think he actually went out and murdered some innocent fowl all for the sake of winning the votes of those elusive "Reagan Democrats." Lot of good it did him. Hillary, of course, is slamming him for being a latte-sipper...
Hillary Slams Kerry and Gore
... but then she goes and begs to borrow his shotgun. I mean, who is she gonna shoot ducks with if not Kerry? Dick Cheney? I hear that can be dangerous. But it does appear that our VP is ready to hang with Hillary, to thank her for all the favors she's been doing lately for the GOP:
Cheney Challenges Hillary to Hunting Contest
Clearly, the Clinton campaign thought "bitter" was a silver bullet that would pierce Obama's body armor, and they went right ahead, shot first and asked questions later. Reading the blogs today, looks like they misfired, and they've taken some serious hits from unexpected ricochets:
Carl Bernstein Fires at Clinton
Scholar Skocpol on Clinton
I'm not so confident in Hillary's aim, and I really don't like her target selection.
There's no question that with Hillary's increasingly errant shots at Obama, she's only succeeding in wounding the Democratic party's prospects in November. But there may be a silver lining here--perhaps the sheer silliness of Hillary the Hunter will demonstrate that Democrats posing as hunters in the primaries end up as sitting ducks in November. Let's hope that this is the swan song, not just of the Clinton campaign, but of this particularly pathetic brand of posing, pandering politics.
