Supreme Court upholds photo ID law for voters in Indiana

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has ruled that states can require voters to produce photo identification without violating their constitutional rights. The decision validates Republican-inspired voter ID laws.
The court vote 6-3 to uphold Indiana's strict photo ID requirement.

April 28 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Supreme Court handed an election-year victory to Republicans, upholding Indiana's voter- identification law as a valid effort to combat fraud.
Writing the court's lead opinion, Justice John Paul Stevens said states have a ``valid interest in protecting the integrity and reliability of the electoral process.''
Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Anthony Kennedy, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito joined Stevens in the majority. Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, David Souter and Stephen Breyer dissented.
