Monday night, Rome elected Alemanno, a former neo-fascist youth leader, -- a few weeks after Silvio Berlusconi won the General Election, and secured a majoriy with an alliance with Umberto Bossi, the Northern League leader, a far-right party.
According to the Guardian:
On Monday night, the area around Rome's city hall rang to chants of "Duce! Duce!", the term adopted by Italy's dictator, Benito Mussolini, equivalent to the German "Führer". Supporters of the new mayor gave the fascist Roman straight-arm salutes.
Many signs are pointing toward an actual rise of neo-fascism in Western Europe, as anti-immigrant parties gain in strength.
Political parties opposed to immigration are indeed growing in force and numbers:
-- the British National Party,
-- Belgium's Vlaamse Belang,
-- France's Front National,
-- the Austrian Freedom Party,
-- the Party for Freedom in the Netherlands,
-- the Danish People's Party,
-- and the Swedish Democrats.
This rise of neo-fascism can be understood as an angry reaction to massive immigration from Eastern Europe and Muslim countries. When can also see it at work in the French anti-hijab legislation or in Geert Wilders' film, Fitna.
As anti-immigrant parties are gaining in strength, a potential nativist movement is taking shape across Western Europe. This neo-fascism is likely to continue to grow as immigration surges ever higher, with mainstream parties paying and expropriating anti-Islamic message.
What will happen now in Rome and Italy and in the rest of Western Europe? :
-->The rejection of multiculturalism;
-->important restriction on immigration;
-->the deportation of illegal immigrants;
-->the re-rise of christian institutions;
-->and State-sponsored privileges for higher birthrates to indigenous European heterosexual couples.
