I am a pretty avid news junkie. I have vivid memories of watching the news as a small child, of being a big fan of Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Morley Saffer...and I have finally had it. I have taken all I can, I can't takes anymore.
The advent of 24 hour news stations means that we get to hear about what used to be local stories, if they have a fire or a dead blonde or something sexy going on. As annoying as that is, though, it can't compare with the way they grab onto a sensationalistic story and run it on a loop while overlooking news that actually has relevance to peoples' lives.
Of course, the flavor of the month is Reverend Wright and how this affects Barack Obama. Of course, they are making sure that this story buries the candidacy of Obama, because we can't actually have an agent of change, not connected to lobbyists and able to make choices that will benefit Americans. This story should have been over a month ago, but no, it is the only thing talked about on MSNBC, CNN, and the dreaded Faux News.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Exxon Mobil announces $10.9 Billion in quarterly profits, and there is NO connection being drawn by our so called watchdogs of society to the outrageous increases in gas prices. Ok, yeah I get it that we have had lower prices than the rest of the world (unless you live in Venezuela or Saudi Arabia) but you never hear about price gouging or racketeering, the connection between outrageous price increases and outrageous profits is simply never made.
Nor is the connection between outrageous fuel prices and outrageous increases in the cost of consumer goods, food, clothing, anything transported.
Where the hell is the media? Running Rev. Wright and Obama on a loop, occasionally showing Hillary trying to extract a shitty cup of convenience store coffee, and showing pictures of a tragic school bus accident that really is a local story somewhere that has no place in national news coverage.
It is disgusting. I just can't take it anymore. I have switched over to Frasier.
