Born and bred in North Carolina, I'm not used to our primary votes truly being "counted." I'm not even sure that I voted in a primary until after college. I DO know that I didn't like Ronald Reagan in college, even as my roommate loved him and thought he was god. Ugh....after he was shot--and, yes, after I KNEW he was okay and was going to make it--let's just get back to the NCAA Championship, 'kay??
I liked Carter, even though he said "nukular"...much as Preznit Bush does now...and I voted for Clinton and liked him--moreso his policies--though I did not try to defend his moral ground--there was no defense for it--and there were many times I felt hoodwinked or slimed on in their (Bill AND Hillary) defense of their remarks, associations, pardons, etc. Sometimes it just felt slimy. More below the jump:
It's funny: I was never all that interested in politics--as I said, did not like Reagan just at a gut level, didn't trust him; he felt like what he was: an actor. But I couldn't fathom anything better...then when Clinton came along, it was wonderful! I think he did some great things for this country, and on the balance was a very good President.
When Bush won, it was like the dark years of Harry Potter. I couldn't believe that so many people believed in this man and thought he was a "good guy." (Okay, he WAS, if you were super rich!)
I'm rambling--and have been spending too much time paying ridiculous bills and working on school stuff tonight--but for the past 2 days I've heard a commercial on TV (in NC) that absolutely gives me chill bumps and raises the hair on my neck. Honestly. He stands balls against the wall and says: you may THINK this is a good proposal, but the gas holiday tax is a sham, it doesn't work, it will only save you $30, and it DOESN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM!!!!
Here is the thing--the slow point I've been making--OBAMA SPEAKS TRUTH TO POWER! Oh. My. God. To hear that truth spoken--other than the bullshit that so many other candidates espouse--to hear someone say "No. Quit looking for quick fixes. This is how it IS, America, so DEAL with it!"
I plan to vote tomorrow for the first American Black President, and I am so dang proud to do it. And if nothing else, here is the pattern broken: my ex-husband is a Republican who votes against his self-interest every time....he is for the "patriotic, Soldier American, and against the, ah, "Elitist" WHOEVER...he would NOT be voting Obama or Hillary....
but here's the good part: I have two sons, who are with me far more than they are with their dad: They LOVE Obama, both of them (and like Hillary too), and they bemoan the fact that dad might vote McCain.
Awesome. Guess I raised 'em right, huh?
