Democracy for NYC recently held a forum and endorsement vote in the Democratic Primary in NYC's 13th Congressional district, currently represented by incumbent Republican Vito Fossella.  Steve Harrison has won our endorsement with an unprecedented 100% of the vote!

Yep! One hundred per cent of the vote.
The reason may be that the only other declared Dem for this seat managed not only to avoid the DFNYC candidate forum but also missed  two other public meeting with Steve this year.
I'll tell you more about the race below:

Yes!
This is the district (NY-13) presently (mis)represented by Vito   (No More Vino) Fossella of recent DUI fame.
Fossella faces a mandatory 5 days in jail for being WAY over the limit 0.17% in Virginia.
(For a holier-than-thou Bush clone the thought of the photo-ops must be haunting)
This race was already a target for us this year.
Steve ran in '06 and was outspent 13 to 1. He still got more votes (44%) than any other Dem in this District configuration.
Fossella is a Bush-clone and a rubber-stamp Republican, the only R Representative in New York City. Our district is all of Staten Island and a sliver of Brooklyn (that resembles a random walk by a guy with a bucket of paint). While the reputation of Staten Island is staunch Repub it really is more complex (ex.  majority Dem. registration). The repub brand is as sour in NY as anywhere and the tabloids are having fun at Vito's expense.
We have a pickup opportunity.

Back to the DFNYC endorsement and Primary
Do we have a candidate?
Well I do and DFNYC does and .....

Steve Harrison is a life-long real-life Democrat who can proudly use the word "liberal" and was one of the original signers of Darcy Burner's  Responsible Plan for Iraq.
Steve is for single payer health care, sensible gun laws, fair taxes, Green initiatives ... If you get to know him you are really going to like this guy.
The best way you can do that is to go to
SteveHarrisonforcongress.com .

The biggest problem Steve has at the moment is a Primary opponent, one Dominick Recchia a soon-to-be-term-limited City Councilman. Although he received some large Real Estate donations he is running a stealth campaign. He does not even have a campaign website ?!?!  His (possibly unintended) function seems to be preventing national attention from getting to Steve Harrison.
The solution is that Steve can get support from DCCC and the national structure if he can can out raise Recchia. Once we have a nominee the prospect of turning all of NYC Blue and registering more Dems will attract national interest.
Fossella has BIG funding problems (not the least of which ais that his campaign treasurer was Chris Ward, the same guy who the RNCC fired after the FBI arrested him for fraud.)
I know everyone needs money, I know how it feels to get to the end of a diary and read the begging but ...(if it was for me, I'd be too ashamed to beg like this, but for my country I'll do it)
Can you give $5 ( a dollar a day for each day Vito (No More Vino) Fossella will do in the pokey or, even better $10.50 for the 10.5 miles he drove while s**t-faced.
Give it to Steve's ActBlue page.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

as a moderate Repub--maybe he feels the pinch.

Seriously ... his first eight years in Washington, he voted more like a congressman from a Southern suburb than someone from NYC.  But his last two years, he's gotten a 75 and a 71 from the American Conservative Union.

Let's hope that doesn't fool anybody.

THe NY Post is reporting that the woman, other than his wife who got him out of jail is the with whom he quietly had a kid. Personally, I don't care about that kind of thing, but it may matter to the voters of Staten Island. Local and Congressional Republicans are making contigency plans in the event he has to resign.

        Baby-moma angle.

Embattled Staten Island Rep. Vito Fossella isn't saying whether he fathered a love child - but his alleged gal pal is doing enough talking for the both of them.

Shapely former Air Force Col. Laura Fay has been frantically phoning friends and relatives, urging them not to talk to the media about the identity of her baby's daddy, a relative told The Post yesterday.

Fay's flurry of calls is designed to shore up a wall of silence since details of her relationship with Fossella emerged when she curiously signed him out of jail after his arrest for drunk driving in Alexandria, Va. last Thursday, the relative said.

        GOP Jitters.

Many party bigwigs are standing behind the embattled congressman - who faces re-election in the fall - but others are deeply concerned that Fossella's political career could be doomed if it emerges that Fay's 3-year-old daughter is his.

"He's got a real reservoir of strength [in his district] to rely on. There's no moves against him within the party," insisted fellow Republican Rep. Peter King, a close friend. "He's not making excuses, none of that."

But one of the state's top Republicans told The Post, "He's not going to be able to win re-election if he is the father."

Sources said party officials have privately discussed who could best hold onto the seat for the GOP should Fossella end up in deeper trouble.

Names being bandied about include Staten Island DA Daniel Donovan and city Councilman James Oddo.

None of this sounds too deadly, right? Dig a little deeper and you find the probems. Fossella was abusive towards the police officers and lied to them, telling them he was going to take his sick daughter to the hospital. Unless "his sick daughter" is a love child by Laura Fay, he was doing no such thing. ["Fay has a 3-year-old daughter and is a single mom. The Post quotes a 'relative' of Fay's who says the woman was 'vague' about who fathered the child.] Meanwhile, Fossella and his pal were so drunk that they were kicked out of a bar after the friend passed out. Neither was capable of driving.

  •  BREAKING: Vito on his way out. (0+ / 0-)

    Washington Post

GOP aides speaking on the condition of anonymity said they expected Fossella would announce imminently that he won't seek reelection. But Fossella spokesman Craig Donner tells the Sleuth that no announcement or press conference is planned.
