It looks like the traditional media is starting to jump on the bandwagon to try to force Hillary onto the ticket. Most of us know all the reasons why this is a horrible, horrible idea, but the corporate media is going to embrace anything that builds their ratings, and that kind of speculation would do just that.
So, Obama has to redirect the speculation in a different direction. My suggestion would be for him to start scheduling a number of events where he and Kathleen Sebelius appear on the same stage, fueling speculation that she is already his choice for VP, and at the same time getting an idea of how well she plays with some of the differnt demographic groups.
Obama doesn't have to tip his hand as to who his choice might be, but there is no harm in the traditional media thinking that he is tipping his hand so they can write off the Hillary speculation as nothing more than a pipe dream by the DLC types. It could be Sebelius, or it could be someone else. Let the media speculate.
I can think of a lot of reasons why Hillary is suddenly so interested in the VP spot, and most of them will turn your stomach. One theory would be that if she were to appear to be joining the team while her surrogates continue to undermine Obama's campaign, she would not have to take the blame for his loss and she could position herself for 2012. One thing is clear: Hillary is not someone who is interested in taking the number two spot behind anyone. She would not be pursuing this unless it was part of some bigger plan that would eventually land her in the Oval Office.
Senator Obama needs to continue acting presidential, positioning himself as the presumptive nominee, and let Hillary continue to act like the spoiled eighth grader plotting against the cheerleader who stole her boyfriend. But it wouldn't hurt to create distraction or two to screw up Hillary's plans. And speculation that the VP has already been chosen would be a good place to start.
