Like many here, I was totally elated by the time I collapsed into bed on Tuesday night (actually, Wednesday morning - about 1am EDT). I didn't necessarily think Obama would wind up winning Indiana, but I knew it was close enough.
I woke up, tired, without haing had enough sleep, on Wednesday morning and started going about my day. I work from a home office and had some solid, legitimate office time planned to catch up on work. I had MSNBC on in the background and they cut to Hillary Clinton giving a speech at a rally in Sherherdstown, WV. They cut from there to Andrea Mitchell talking about being on the plane with Hillary Clinton after the IN and NC results had been tallied.
Stay with me over the fold.
So Andrea Mitchell was talking about being on the airplane with Hillary Clinton (Bill Clinton took a separate plane to go back to Chappaqua earlier - way to mind the environment there, folks) as she left Indiana and how at once, all of her staffers' blackberries started to go off. Mitchell related that the messages were all about Tim Russert's declaration that the race, for Clinton, was "over". Mitchell said that Clinton took matters into her own hands and decided then and there that it was on to West Virginia.
When you follow that with the Clinton campaign's conference call for the press that same morning wherein they asserted AGAIN that Obama can't capture white voters, it was clear she was not only staying in but going to stay on a course that would harm Obama.
Man I was pissed. I remain pissed, frankly. I keep coming back to the idea, unproven, that it's part of her plan to weaken Obama for the general in the hopes that he loses to McCain (aka Grampy McBush aka Grumpy McSame) so that she can run again in 2012. Yes, yes - I know - there are other reasons she would stay in - but the "spoiler" idea is the one that stays with me personally.
Yet in the middle of all of this anger on my part I was literally reduced to hilarity. I don't know if it's because I was sleep deprived or in denial or what, but I wanted to share it here.
Hillary Clinton is the Black Knight!!
Hillary Clinton through December 2007:
Tough. "Inevitable". HUGE war chest.
Hillary Clinton after Iowa:
"Tis but a scratch", she says.
Hillary Clinton after Super Tuesday (February - the real one):
Hillary Clinton after the Potomac Primaries and Wisconsin:
"Just a flesh wound!" she cries.
Hillary Clinton after North Carolina and Indiana:
Obama: "What are you going to do - bleed on me?"
Clinton: "I'm INVINCIBLE!!"
America: "You're a looney."
Heh. I couldn't stop laughing and when I thought about it, I thought, she IS the Black Knight. I don't know whether to give her respect for that or throw my shoe at the TV when she's on it.
If you'd like to see the whole "Black Knight" clip, here you go:
Indeed. :)
