Kossacks Under 35 is a weekly diary series designed to create a community within DailyKos that focuses on young people. Our overall goals are to work on increasing young voters' Democratic majority, and to raise awareness about issues that particularly affect young people, with a potential eye to policy solutions. Kossacks of all ages are welcome to participate (and do!), but the overall framework of each diary will likely be on or from a younger person's perspective. If you would like more information or want to contribute a diary, please email kath25 at kossacksunder35 (at) gmail dot com
This is kind of a stream-of-consciousness type of diary tonight. I plum forgot it was my turn to do this until Kath25 reminded me, and I don't have too many things on my mind that could apply to the entire group aged 35 and younger.
Or maybe I do. At any rate this diary is just going to be a tad on the random side--all the stuff that bounces around my head during the day. And then you can all share what's on your mind this week---or not.
What's In My Head This Week
@I found a blog all about Volcanoes. There is a spectacular eruption underway in Southern Chile at the moment with some spectacular pictures. When Chaitén last erupted, civilization hadn't even begun yet. Pretty cool, huh? I've spent most of the last couple days reading this blog, at the detriment of the TPS Reports on my desk.
@I think Hillary is done. And I also think Chelsea Clinton has grown up to be an exceptionally attractive and accomplished young woman. The sins of the parents should not be attached to their children.
@I wish more people were more giving. Not to political campaigns, that's easy. I mean to the homeless people you see on the street. You don't even have to give them money---just buy them a sandwich or something.
@Jesus Christ Lords of Kobol. Half a Million could be deaddue to Cyclone Nargis. I did the math--this would be like losing 3 million Americans. That's if I did the math right--I am kinda dumb. Nargis sliced across the most densely populated part of Burma. Just a horrific catastrophe all around and much of it could have been avoided if that evil Junta had listened to the warnings from India. Dictators suck.
@Househunting sucks when you want to live in the one zip code that's still a seller's market.
@I highly recommend that people join the Young Professionals group in their area. I wish I had when I first moved here instead of being with that inflexible and much-too-old dillwad. It would have made much of the last 3 years much less miserable.
@I'm addicted to sushi. mmmmm. raw fish.
@Edscan is awesome.
@Apparently the Class of 2008 is going to have a good job market.
Your chances of having a job at graduation—maybe even the perfect entry-level job—are great. This is the healthiest job market in three years, according to many of the employers who are recruiting members of the Class of 2008.
Overall, according to Job Outlook 2008, an annual survey of college recruiters, employers plan to hire 16 percent more new college graduates in 2007-08 than they did in 2006-07.
The growing demand for new graduates is a result of an increased demand for employers’ products and services; in addition, employees—baby boomers—are retiring or nearing retirement age, and other employees are leaving organizations for new opportunities. Employers expect the good job market to continue—or perhaps get better.
"We have heard from a number of employers that they are looking to hire more new college graduates to feed their ‘talent pipeline,’ " says Marilyn Mackes, executive director of the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the nonprofit that conducts the annual survey. "Employers are looking at new grads as their future leaders and want to groom them for those roles."
Hiring projections are strong across the board—regardless of industry, economic sector, or geographic region. Hiring expectations are especially strong in the Midwest, where employers anticipate hiring 25 percent more new college graduates this year. Competition is expected to be particularly fierce for graduates in the engineering, computer science, and accounting fields.
riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
I should have been an engineer.
@I've officially given up on dating. That means next week I'll meet someone. Heh. Or not, since it's quite easy to be a frakking slut get laid but next-to-impossible to get a decent date with a decent guy fairly close to my age in my area. I think that's a sad incitement of the 'community' if you ask me. So yes, officially off the market. Single and NOT looking.
I wonder if it's my personality...hmmm the guys in this chat room I am in are really stupid tonight. I am tired of frakking dumbasses.
@I dunno what to do with my stimulus check.
@It dawned on me that I've only ever gone on one real vacation in my whole life, and that was last year. wow.
@So if you rub Rogain on your bald spot and it regrows hair, would it grow hair on my face so I can connect my mustache to my chinstrap? Or if I rubbed it on my chest would I get a nice furry man-chest? It might cover up its bony look...I'm probably the only person in the world who hates being skinny.
@They don't pay me enough for this crap. Or they pay me too much since I get the crap done and have lots of time to sit on my thumbs. yay. TPS reports!
there's at least eye candy to look at in the office, though.
@Guinness really is the best beer out there that there is.
@There's a random chihuahua running around my neighborhood.
@My state representative's dog is always barking at me when I walk past his house on my way to get the bus in the morning. What do you suppose that means? I'm seriously developing a neurosis about this.
@Dishes unfortunately don't wash themselves. Takes the fun out of cooking. Someone should do something about that.
@I should really join a gym.
@I wish I hadn't been curious about nutmeg...and that's all I'm going to say.
@I plan on living forever.
What's in your head?
