As Jim Morrison once sang..."This is the end, my only friend, the end."
For several months (seeming more like years), the primary has felt like a pitched battle. A forced march. I've watched my hair turn gray. I've snapped at those I've loved.
But in the end, it's going to come down to this. There's just no more money in the cupboard...save for that which HRC is lending herself. And this is going to be what drives her off the road.
More after the flip
We've been hearing about the financial woes for a while. Sometimes quite extensively. But in today's NY Times, however, it is printed out for all to see. Writ large. They are folding up their tents even as they seek to destroy everything else with 'em.
The once-formidable fund-raising machine of Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton has begun to sputter at the worst possible moment for Mrs. Clinton’s presidential campaign, Clinton advisers and donors said Thursday, with spending curtailed on political events and advertising as Mrs. Clinton seeks to compete in the last six nominating contests.

The campaign is clearly running low on cash, although advisers would not say how much money — or how little — Mrs. Clinton currently has. The campaign had started April with over $10 million in unpaid debts, and Mrs. Clinton was vastly outspent by Senator Barack Obama in North Carolina and Indiana.
Campaign aides say that her debt has grown significantly. If I were a creditor, I'd go to a collection agency.
Clinton advisers said they were looking for opportunities to save money on campaign events in the coming primary states of West Virginia, Kentucky and Oregon. The advisers said events would be more frill-free, but they also said that the campaign was likely to go deeper into debt to vendors who design and produce her events.
Still, other top fund-raisers working for Mrs. Clinton said that enthusiasm among donors had fallen sharply and that they had little confidence there would be a financial turnaround. They said that some donors had questioned why they should give more money when another set of numbers — the calculus to win enough delegates for the nomination — seemed so against Mrs. Clinton at this point..
Cash Woes...Spending Cut
I know we are supposed to ignore the Clintons and turn our faces to the Brave New Future. There's a part of me, however, that remains in the five stages of grieif for the winning side, as outlined by Al Giordano at The Field - Five Stages of Grief for the Winning Side (highly recommended). The fact is, however, she's still out there making mischief. Hopefully this will cause the her machinery to seize up.
So, I realize is not "new" news but we have not yet seen how the cash flow woes are actually beginning to dent the shiny shell of the Clinton campaign machine. Behind the flake coat of paint are rusting levers and leaky valves. This thing is so over...in so many different ways.
