Top Headline:
If You Don’t Like John McCain’s Environmental Position, Just Wait Five Minutes. . .It Will Change
"I'm proud of my record on the environment," he said at a news conference Friday at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City. "As president, I will dedicate myself to addressing the issue of climate change globally."
But an examination of McCain's voting record shows an inconsistent approach to the environment: He champions some "green" causes while casting sometimes contradictory votes on others.
The senator from Arizona has been resolute in his quest to impose a federal limit on greenhouse gas emissions, even when it means challenging his own party. But he has also cast votes against tightening fuel-efficiency standards and resisted requiring public utilities to offer a specific amount of electricity from renewable sources. He has worked to protect public lands in his home state, winning a 2001 award from the National Parks Conservation Association for helping give the National Park Service some say over air tours around the Grand Canyon, work that prompts former interior secretary and Arizona governor Bruce Babbitt to call him "a great friend of the canyon." But he has also pushed to set aside Endangered Species Act protections when they conflict with other priorities, such as the construction of a University of Arizona observatory on Mount Graham.

Flipper story #2:
McCain Advisor Forced To Resign Over Curious Lobbyist Clients, Including Military Junta In Burma
The public relations executive that Senator John McCain’s campaign tapped to run the Republican National Convention this summer resigned his post Saturday after a magazine reported that his firm had lobbied for the military junta that runs Myanmar.
The executive, Doug Goodyear, quit his post as the coordinator of the convention, which will be held Sept. 1 through Sept. 4 in Minneapolis-St. Paul. "Today I offered the convention my resignation so as not to become a distraction in this campaign,’’ Mr. Goodyear said in a two-sentence statement. "I continue to strongly support John McCain for president, and wish him the best of luck in this campaign.’’
Mr. Goodyear is the chief executive office and a founding partner of DCI Group, a public affairs group with offices in Washington and Phoenix. He offered his resignation on Saturday after Newsweek reported that his firm had been paid $348,000 in 2002 to represent the military junta that runs Myanmar.

Flipper story #3:
Here Comes The Exodus. . .
Doug Davenport, the regional campaign manager for the mid-Atlantic states, founded the DCI Group's lobbying practice and oversaw the contract with Myanmarin 2002.
"Doug has tendered his resignation and we have accepted it," Jill Hazelbaker, McCain's communications director, wrote in a e-mail.
He joins former DCI Group CEO Doug Goodyear, who resigned yesterday from the post of convention CEO after Newsweek reported that DCI was paid more than $300,000 to represent Myanmar's ruling junta.

Flipper story #4: (Flip flop. That's why we call this the Flipper)
Another Installment Of McCain 2.0: J-Mac Backs Away From Abortion Stance
"If he were to change the party platform," to account for exceptions such as rape, incest or risk to the mother's life, "I think that would be political suicide," said Tony Perkins, the president of the conservative Family Research Council, to ABC News. "I think he would be aborting his own campaign because that is such a critical issue to so many Republican voters and the Republican brand is already in trouble."
A senior Republican close to McCain told ABC News that building a more inclusive GOP is a top priority for the Arizonas senator.
But this adviser does not see changing the party platform to include exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother as necessary for achieving that vision.
The problem for McCain, however, is that he excoriated then-Gov. George W. Bush during a 2000 debate for not being willing to make this change to the platform, and Democrats are salivating at the prospect of arguing, in the words of one strategist, "that another four years of Bush begins with another four years of Bush's platform."

Additional opposition research is being done by Media Matters Action Network.
HT to Paul Rosenberg at Open Left. He writes in a must read column: "Today, Paul Waldman and David Brock are releasing a new chapter to their book, Free Ride: John McCain and the Media.. The new chapter is an update to the media coverage of McCain since the book was published, and is NOW available at www.mccainsfreeride.com. (snip)
What To Do
In a conference call announcing the chapter's release, co-author Paul Waldman discussed what can be done to change the coverage.
"We have a right as citizens that all the candidates should be judged by the same standard," Waldman said. He argued that some of the same techniques that had been used to corrupt the system could be used to correct it as well.
