John Edwards, the former Democratic Vice Presidential nominee and senator from North Carolina, has just endorsed two important campaigns.
Yesterday, in Philadelphia, Edwards inaugurated Half in Ten, a powerful new coalition that will cut the poverty rate in half by 2018.
Today, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Edwards endorses Senator Barack Obama's grassroots-led campaign to take back the White House.
Edwards -- your Important Blog's favorite candidate for President -- continues to lead the way forward with both of these endorsements.
Half in Ten, a multi-year campaign that will be waged by at least four of the most prominent civil justice organizatoins, will take John Edwards' campaign theme -- end poverty -- and keep it front-and-center on the agenda over the next ten years. As Edwards said yesterday:
"The challenge before us is to make it so that hard work is enough to get ahead again. That is not just a question of helping our brothers and sisters who are living in poverty – it is a question of restoring the fundamental fairness that this country was founded upon."
Clearly, Edwards believes that the mission of ending poverty is best served by an Obama administration. When considering the alternative (a McCain administration), the need for supporting Senator Obama's amazing campaign is clear.
John Edwards will have as his legacy his ability to focus on the most important issues facing America. War. Poverty. Inequality. Obama is the best candidate to take up the Edwards mantle and drive it to the White House. But as Obama often says: "it takes a movement" -- not just a President, to bring change.
Edwards and Obama will make a great team going forward toward November. And the Half in Ten movement will be an important part of that movement.
Do you want a better America? Let's get to work.
