As I understand it here are the facts:
- Obama has won more states than Hillary
- Obama has won more of the popular vote than Hillary - by close to 600,000. Obama still leads if you count the Florida votes. Since he was not even on the MI ballot we can't count that. Yet, if you gave Obama all the votes in MI which were cast under "uncommitted" he would still be ahead.
- Obama has won more of the caucuses than Hillary
- Obama has won more of the primaries than Hillary
- Obama has more pledged delegates than Hillary
- Obama has more super delegates than Hillary
- Obama has raised more money than Hillary
- The other democratic hopefuls, who had some real support, back Obama:
A) Richardson
B) Edwards
C) Dodd
D) Biden...okay, not really, just showing up at Obama Rallies.
So if all of the above is true what remains of Hillary's logic?
We should give Hillary this: she has remained 100% consistent with her major mantra - "despite what anyone says or does Hillary deserves the candidacy and would make a better president than anyone else." It was Hillary's mantra before the first vote was cast and it has remained so despite every "metric" showing that the people of this country, when we add up the numbers, do not agree with her. Those pesky friggin voters! Unless of course we want to just toss our lot in with blue collar, under educated, white, racist, men. I'm thinking we should toss our lot in with black, Muslim, lesbian, women, who drive Subarus. Hey, as long as we are slicing and dicing.
Even if she is right, Hillary's logic is the antithesis of democracy. When all the voting, according to any accepted metric, has her as the loser, we don't get to place the results in the circular file b/c the loser thinks she will win in November. We certainly can respect her disagreement with the voters and yet, Hillary doesn't get the veto power.
Additionally, even if Hillary is right in May 2008, she isn't going to be right in November. George Bush went from an approval rating of almost 90% to losing in a landslide to Clinton with only 37% of the popular vote. Thus, we are, in this sweet democracy, left with only one thing to bank on - the votes. And Hillary doesn't have them, no matter how you cut it up.
This is why Hillary is disliked and losing. She is always "right" and has acted like she "deserves" while not earning it. Her mantra should be "it isn't me who is wrong, it is the rest of the world."
