In another profile in irrelevance, Edwards has finally meandered his way to the endorsement that was obvious six months ago. When I asked this question back in December, there was much indignation. Commenters deployed all the now-familiar arguments and apologetics for an obviously losing campaign: "Let's let the voters decide," (as though the eventual result was in doubt) "There are still millions of votes to be counted," "Isn't this all a little premature?"
Well, was it premature? I'm not so sure. Certainly, we can all agree that an Edwards endorsement back when people still remembered there was such a guy as John Edwards would have had somewhat more impact. I didn't mean to suggest back then that he ought to endorse the next day, before the voting even started (although that probably would've made things go much more smoothly). Just, you know, maybe some time within the first two or even three months after it began.
I just wonder about this guy. What's his deal? He puts so much effort into a presidential campaign that is quite obviously doomed from the start. This after being on a losing ticket as the southern guy who didn't deliver a single southern state (I suspect we all know which of the Democratic party's best and brightest came up with that idea). His message: Let's end poverty! Brilliant, the single message that could make voters think twice about voting for the Democratic candidate this fall.
Well, the good news is that through his lack of good sense, he managed to piss away any slight chance he had at the VP slot, so maybe this time we can get someone electorally useful instead. Someone from Pennsylvania would be good.
Anyway, bottom line on Edwards: omg wtf rofl. This guy needs to go buy a tropical island somewhere and get out of politics.
