I'm sure we all very much enjoyed seeing Tweety take down that idiot Kevin James yesterday. The guy wanted the whole world to know that Barack Obama is an "appeaser", even though he had NO idea what that meant.
But I wonder how many of us recall that our fearless leader had a very similar moment back in August of 2004.
The idiot George W. Bush (no disrespect, of course) was speaking at the Unity Conference in Washington, DC, in what was billed as the largest conference of journalists in US history, with more than 7,500 participating. Among other things, Bush was questioned about Native American sovereignty and tribal issues. Typical Bushiness ensued...
MARK TRAHANT: Most school kids learn about government in the context of city, county, state and federal, and of course, tribal governments are not part of that at all. Mr. President, you have been a governor and a president, so you have unique experience looking at it from two directions. What do you think tribal sovereignty means in the 21st century and how do we resolve conflicts between tribes and the federal and state governments?
GEORGE BUSH: Yeah. Tribal sovereignty means that, it’s sovereign. You’re a—you’re a—you have been given sovereignty and you’re viewed as a sovereign entity.
[crowd laughter]
MARK TRAHANT: Okay.
GEORGE BUSH: And therefore, the relationship between the federal government and tribes is one between sovereign entities.
Jesse Jackson was also at the conference. And as we've seen on a few occasions over the years, he can actually be a pretty funny guy (remember the Green Eggs and Ham skit on SNL?) Here's Jesse talking to a reporter a little after Bush gave his speech:
BRENT MERRILL: As you saw today at the president’s conference, the leader of the free world does not understand tribal sovereignty. What would you do in your estimation, Reverend, what would you do and how would you advise tribes to educate our folks, just exactly what tribal sovereignty is?
JESSE JACKSON: The President explained. You just didn’t understand. Sovereignty is sovereignty. You understand? It’s like in sovereignity. If you are on a reservation, you have been soverized. Your Ph.D. is in soverbication. You understand? I don’t think you understand.
Oh, and by the way, here ya go George:
Sovereign: "Independent of, and unlimited by, any other; possessing, or entitled to, original authority or jurisdiction; as, a sovereign state."
Sovereign state: "A state which administers its own government, and is not dependent upon, or subject to, another power."
