Jordan was Jimmy Carter's Chief of Staff.
Jordan was a key advisor and strategist for Jimmy Carter during the 1976 presidential campaign and during Carter's administration, serving as White House Chief of Staff in 1979-1980. Jordan played a powerful role in the formulation of election strategies and government policies.

Interesting that in this campaign, Jordan was a supporter of the Unity08 movement.
"I thought there was going to be the opportunity this year for a third-party candidate. I saw a perfect storm of events — both parties preoccupied with discussions of social issues, not the real issues, and the prospect that both parties were going to nominate people from both extremes, and leave a huge territory in the middle for a third party.

The obituary from the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Good that his son was able to make it home to be by his father's side.
Former CNN President and friend of the family, Tom Johnson, confirmed the death in an email, reading, "Our dear friend Hamilton Jordan passed away at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. He was comfortable and surrounded by his family. His son Hamilton, Jr. got back home from Europe in time to be with his father."
