Truckers have been some of the hardest hit by the rising price of gas, which has doubled in the last 12 months. I suggest Obama start thinking hard about a plan to give relief to small business truck drivers. Why? It's Obama's road to the heart of Appalachia.
Why truck driver relief?
- Many of them are working their way up from nothing.
- They spend their money here in the U.S.A.
- They are a group of small businessmen.
- They listen to a lot of radio.
- They are hurting -- the gas prices are wiping out their gains.
- They are the last American cowboys.
It is a real opportunity for Obama to show he "gets it", that he understands what "white working people/less than 4 years college" are dealing with.
Truckers understand probably better than anyone that our roads & bridges need to be repaired, and that highway repair money creates summer jobs.
But they also need help.
I suggest that Obama target something to them. Like a gas tax holiday but smarter.
BTW, Sen. Jim Webb (D) was on Olbermann tonight. He said in Appalachia they think that if you are white & poor no one sees you. He also said that if poor whites and poor blacks could get together, they could transform this country.
The Appalachian mountains won't go away, so we must go to the mountain.
