Apologies if this has been diaried already...
"I have learned that when you are campaigning for as many months as Senator Clinton and I have been campaigning, sometimes you get careless in terms of the statements that you make and I think that is what happened here. Senator Clinton says that she did not intend any offense by it and I will take her at her word on that," Obama told Radio Isla Puerto Rico.
This is exactly why I support Senator Obama. Enough with the political point scoring and the gotcha politics. That's what Obama and all of his supporters are and should be trying to fight. Bravo for a great statement asking all of us to move on from what in the long run isn't an important issue that affects millions of Americans.
I should also elaborate, that the outrage from the comment has actually left me feeling a little squeamish. At this point, I pretty much feel nothing but sympathy for Hillary. Here is a woman who has been a solid Democratic Senator and who has spent a good chunk of her life fighting for progressive causes. She's also obviously expended tremendous time, energy and emotion into this campaign.
Does she deserve the pile-on for the statement? I'd be lying if I said no, but at the same time, we all know it's over, and I believe that with the backlash to this comment, she knows it is over as well. It's time to unite the party behind Obama.
Thank you, Barack, for your classiness. And thank you for exhibiting yet another reason to support you. You represent the future and the hope of not just Democratic politics, but American politics.
UPDATE: I'm hearing it from some people on my "nothing but sympathy" for Hillary quote. Of course I understand the anger. And even a few weeks ago, I would have been right there with you. But her campaign is officially sunk. She's on her way out. No more money. The media has completely turned on her. And what uncommitted superdelegate in their right mind wants to line up behind her now?? This race is over. And we will have plenty of time to get behind Barack. It's become difficult for me to gin up much more outrage. Let the healing begin.
UPDATE 2: First time top of the rec list. Pretty cool. Thanks.
